Raising Champions

One of HUD’s goals is to utilize housing as a platform for improving quality of life, for example PHA’s could assist residents to improve educational outcomes. Our residents are helping us craft a program to do just that. We call it “Raising Champions.”

We began by looking at the facts, and found that: Of 50 children having trouble learning to read in kindergarten, 44 of them will still be having trouble in third grade.

Early literacy is not reading and writing. Early literacy includes vocabulary, print motivation, print awareness, narrative skills, phonological awareness, and letter knowledge.

All of this happens in the child’s earliest years, long before agencies like Head Start or their public school district can access the families.
